Hot air balloon tattoos are the best. Why? Because a hot air balloon can be way more creative than you think. Check out our favorite tattoos in this fun article. When it comes to tattoos, people want something they can have fun with, but also has some deep meaning to it. I myself have always loved the idea of the hot air balloon for many reasons. One thing is that you can play with them and really make them your own. Hot air balloon tattoos are incredibly versatile in design and color so they really are perfect for just about anybody.
Dandelion In The Wind Hot Air Balloon
Dandelions are often portrayed in tattoos in a number of different ways. This is partly because they have the ability to really show off the skill of the artist with the small lines and intricate little fluffs of cottony seed pods. Also, they portray the idea that we can be freed, let go to fly away on the winds and release our hold on what is rooting us in place. I especially like the idea of it being incorporated into the hot air balloon with the addition of the top hat for the basket. What a fun little piece. Look here for more incredible dandelion tattoos.
This tattoo is done in a more traditional style which is absolutely perfect for hot air balloon tattoos. The solid lines and wonderful colors make this one really stand out. I always have loved the look of traditional tattoos because it is a timeless style, one that stands out and stands the test of time. Nothing beats the classic beauty.
Mapped in the Sky
I absolutely adore maps tattoos and maps and globes in general. The idea of using the balloon as a globe is an incredible one. One would be able to track their travels across the sky by following the trail on the map just above their heads. I like the idea of using color in the clouds only, making them yellow and gold in the background was a wonderful addition to this tattoo.
Heart on the Line Hot Air Balloon
This tattoo serves to show the absolute versatility in hot air balloon tattoos. By using an anatomically correct heart as the balloon part, they have opened up an entire world of imagination and possibilities. It could stand to show that the heart is free and what carries us through life. The detail and colors here may be faded, but they still show off this incredible little piece of art.
Why the basket is on fire in this one baffles me, but I kind of like the image of it. It is another traditional style tattoo, with a great combination of bright reds and blues, both mixed with the muted and toned down grays and browns giving the piece a very classic feel. My favorite part is the line that is bent in there on the left, giving it a feeling of movement.
One of the best aspects of hot air balloon tattoos is how they can be done in a photorealistic style, but still pop. They are lovely forms of transportation and with more than one in the air, the sky is filled with jostling bulbs of color, each adding it’s own unique flair to the blue and white canvas of the sky. Photorealistic tattoos are incredible works of art and I give kudos to any artist who is able to turn ink into something that looks as though it was photographed right on the skin. The only non-photorealistic elements in this one are the little swoops of blue that denote the outline of the tattoo. It is a wonderful use of color and really gives a little bit extra to the piece.
Everything in this tattoo screams France to me. It could just be the trailing banner of a bientot, a french phrase meaning ‘see you soon.’ The sparse use of color is unique in this one. Usually hot air balloon tattoos are full of color and vibrant, or devoid of color at all, simply being an outline of designs. This one chooses to splatter in a bit of watercolor teal and pink, giving it a soft, delicate look.
The heavy lines and dots used to form this tattoo are simply stunning. This design in made up mainly of diamond shapes and smaller circles. The pointillist style is back, and I love it. It works so well here fo the shading.
How can you go wrong with this incredibly cute depiction of an elephant being carried away by a colorfully bright hot air balloon? Simple answer, you can’t. Clearly, this tattoo is more geared towards women, but it comes off well with a magnificent use of color in the balloon and background. For more fun elephant designs, check this link.
For a Couple
Hot air balloon tattoos are so versatile that they can even be used so that couples can show their devotion to each other, like these little dark balloons here. For more great couples tattoos, check these out.
Not all hot air balloon tattoos need to involve colors. This wonderful piece combines the hot air balloon general design with the ever popular paisley. I love this one for its detail, but also for its simplicity.
This fiery eye is a weird little tattoo, but I really like it. The eye is so well done and, as hot air balloon tattoos go, it is striking and definitely an original.
This no color piece calls to mind the Victorian or Steampunk era, where hot air balloons are often portrayed as ways to get around. I love the look of it, with the smaller white accents, looking like small pearls sewn into the canvas fabric. The artist even gave it the effect of draped fabrics often found in balloon designs from that era.
There isn’t much that is more manly than this traditional styled piece. Something about it just speaks to me, maybe it’s the idea of the balloon as his brain, indicating his head being constantly in the clouds. The hair, mustache, and beard are the highlights of this piece for me. It is wonderfully rendered and just intriguing to look at.
I don’t know what it is that draws me to this one. For some reason, I really just like it. There is a distinct lack of detail in it, but it gives the illusion of being a very complicated piece. It stands out among the others because it not only lacks color, but also solid, straight lines. It seems like more of a philosophical piece than anything else.
Hand tattoos are incredibly fun, but highly visible pieces. If you are thinking about a tattoo on your hand, think hard because this is one that you will rarely be able to cover up. However, this landscape piece, with the tiny hot air balloon is a wonder example of a well-done hand piece and I like it very much. The sky is absolutely amazing for such a small space and it really gives this tattoo depth.
Showing the versatility of hot air balloon tattoos, this forearm piece turns the whole theme inside out. Instead of the balloon depicted in the sky, here the sky and land are shown within the fabric of the balloon itself. What is really great about this tattoo is that it manages to keep all the great colors that hot air balloons are known for while showing an incredible amount of detail.
Land of Enchantment
The state of New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment and it is often associated with hot air balloons. There is a lovely balloon fest each year in Albuquerque and another great display at White Sands National Monument. This balloon is made to portray the New Mexico flag, which is yellow with a red Zia, or sun, symbol in the middle of it.
Anchors are a common element in tattoos, but there are few anvils. Here an anvil is shown as a weight attempting to hold the balloon down, but the balloon, despite the best effort of the weight at the end of the line, refuses to be grounded and is lifting the heavy iron anchor up off the ground.
This lovely piece shows a large balloon in the foreground with a much smaller one in the background. The colors are more abstract here, not playing by the rules and staying in bounds. It gives this tattoo a pretty surreal look, and with the geometric patterns in the fabric, it really creates an interesting piece visually.
Here is another great example of a couple or sibling tattoo. This one is clearly a male and female couple. The balloon designs are the same, but the colors are different, hers being more muted and pastel. His balloon is larger and the colors brighter. Despite the differences, they are still two wonderfully well-rendered tattoos.
This one also reminds me of the Victorian era, with the shape of the balloon and the adornments on it. It is a wonderfully detailed piece and generally just a beautiful way to depict these wonderful floating bulbs.
